IATA Special Provision A67 outlines the conditions under which wet cell batteries can be classified as non-spillable and transported as Not Restricted by air. This provision commonly applies to sealed lead-acid, AGM, and gel cell batteries used in equipment such as UPS systems, mobility devices, and security systems.
To qualify under A67, the battery must have successfully passed both vibration and pressure differential testing to demonstrate that it will not leak electrolyte during normal air transport conditions. The battery must also contain no free or unabsorbed liquid electrolyte.
Additional Requirements
To ship under Special Provision A67:
Battery terminals must be protected against short circuits.
Equipment must be prepared to prevent accidental activation.
Batteries installed in equipment must be securely fastened and protected from damage during transport.
Air Waybill Requirements
When an Air Waybill is issued, the shipment description must include:
"Not Restricted – Special Provision A67"
This indicates that the shipment meets the requirements of IATA Special Provision A67 and is not subject to the full Dangerous Goods Regulations.
