IATA Special Provision A70 allows certain internal combustion engines, fuel cell engines, and machinery to be transported by air as Not Restricted, provided they have been properly prepared and no dangerous goods remain within the fuel system.
This provision commonly applies to engines shipped separately or installed in vehicles, machinery, or equipment.
What Does A70 Require?
For liquid fuel engines, one of the following must apply:
The fuel is not classified as dangerous goods; or
The fuel tank and fuel system have been flushed, purged of vapours, and contain no free liquid fuel. All fuel lines must also be sealed, capped, or securely connected.
For flammable gas-powered engines, the fuel system must be:
Flushed and purged.
Filled with a non-flammable gas or fluid.
Verified as non-flammable.
Pressurised to no more than 200 kPa at 20°C.
In both cases, the shipper must provide the airline with documentation confirming the required preparation has been completed.
