IATA Special Provision A48 states that packaging performance tests are not required for shipments covered by this provision. This means the package is exempt from the standard UN specification packaging testing requirements that would normally apply to dangerous goods.
What Does A48 Mean?
Where Special Provision A48 applies, the packaging does not need to undergo UN performance testing. However, the package must still be:
- Strong enough to withstand normal transport conditions.
- Properly closed and secured.
- Prepared in accordance with all other applicable IATA Dangerous Goods requirements.
A48 only removes the requirement for packaging performance tests, it does not exempt the shipment from any other applicable packing, marking, labelling, or documentation requirements.
